Thinking of Poker as a Scientific Study

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

In scientific studies, when a scientist wants to test a theory, they set up variables. There is an independent variable, and a dependent variable. The dependent variable relies on the independent variable, and the results are what come of the interaction between the two.

An example: boiling liquids. Water is known to have a distinct boiling point. That boiling point is a set temperature that doesn’t change. What we can change though is the type of liquid. Thus, the independent variable is the temperature at which water boils. The dependent variable is whether or not other liquids boil at this temperature. To test the theory, we place oil into a vat and let it heat to the boiling point of water. If it doesn’t boil, we can assess that oil has a higher boiling point than does water.

Now let’s apply this to poker. When in a game of online poker, there are independent variables of immense proportions. Stack sizes are independent variables, as are actions, raises, folds, calls, reraises. The dependent variable here is your reaction to the actions of the independent variables. So if a rock opens under the gun, your response depends on how you perceive this variable. A good theory to make is to fold here if you know the player is a rock, and his action (independent variable) is raising under the gun. Your dependent action should be to fold with a weak hand.

And you can take this as deep as you are comfortable with. But there is one thing to always remember if you choose to look at poker online as a scientific scenario. The independent variables are just that, independent. That means we can’t control them. How they behave, though, can change the way we think about the situation and thus reinforce or shape our actions. In essence, they can shape the way we see the game, and how we play it.

Seven Card Stud

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Speaking of seven card stud, it is a game that a good and judicious intermediate poker player can win a lot of money on.

I say this because seven card stud is probably the most traditional and oldest poker game that is still played today, and as such typically only older, experienced players are sitting at a seven card stud table. Seven card stud tables are often jokingly referred to as “old man tables” as people under the age of 50 typically don’t play the game.

How can this work in your favor? Well, seven card stud poker players are notorious for not respecting younger players. If a 20 or 30 year old sits down at a seven card stud players, all the old, grizzled veterans immediately think “here comes a fish” and smile to themselves. They will assume that you don’t know what your doing, how to bet, when to raise, etc.

This can work heavily to your advantage. Play into that stereotype. Act nervous, or even ask the dealer a basic question about how to play the game. Players will assume you don’t know what your doing; and in turn they won’t know what you’re really doing when you raise or bet or call. Use this to your advatnage and make a lot of money.

Second Chance for US Online Gambling

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Back in 2006 with the inception of the UIGEA, several poker online rooms packed up and closed shop in the US, but there may be another chance coming up pretty soon. It’s no secret that several people enjoy gambling and playing online poker on a daily basis, and a few sites still left in the US allow for customers to still play. But that may change in the coming days. What’s happening is that the governments are realizing that a lot of gambling is still going on, but the state is getting none of the revenue for it. So coming to the aid of poker players everywhere, and possibly to the ailing economies is Barney Frank who in the next few days will be introducing legislation to overturn the UIGEA and to legalize and regulate gaming in the US market. Frank tried to this once in 2007 and failed, but has higher hopes this time around with a friendlier Whitehouse under the Obama administration and a more liberal congress that may be just what the representative needs to get this pushed through. In nearly every article published about this kind of regulation, the market analytics group Pricewaterhouse Cooper is cited for the figure of taxable revenue such a legalization could yield. And I’ll give you a hint, the number is big. Like 50 billion or more bigand that’s a conservative estimate. If this bill passes, the time will soon be here when the US citizens can join their brethren overseas in the sport of friendly gaming.

The 2009 WSOP featured a new back-to-back online poker winner, Omaha High-Low champion Thang T. Luu, who also won the 2008 Omaha High Low contest. Luu, a 34-year old professional casino online player who lives in Las Vegas, pulled off an amazing feat. Not only did he win the tournament two years in a row, but he finished second in the same tournament in 2007.

It was the largest ever Omaha High Low in WSOP history, with 918 participants and the biggest prize pool ever. A Viet Nam immigrant who arrived here at the age of 17, Luu got his start in the game as a table dealer in Las Vegas. He has now cashed in five WSOP events and has earned more than $700,000 as a poker professional.

There was one other champion at the final table — Freddy Deeb — and many bracelet holders made it to the cash, including Eli Elezra, Annie Duke, Erick Lindgren and Todd Brunson.

Second-place finisher Ed Smith also duplicated his previous outings, making this the third time he’s finished runner-up in WSOP events. Congratulations to Tiger Luu for his memorable win and new record in WSOP history.

Folding Premium Poker Hands

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

One of the most difficult things to do in poker is fold big hands. In a game where you may only see a premium pocket pair or big slick once every few hours, it is tough to get away from the poker hand even when facing a tough flop or an out of position raise. In smaller games, or with a larger stack, the situation may warrant playing a hand like pocket jacks or pocket tens with the option of getting away from them on a flop that misses your hand. Making these decisions can be based on prior experience with your opponents, as well as position. Using these two factors to evaluate where your poker hand stands will make you a more profitable player in the long run, if you can avoid stacking off needlessly with a hand that is beat more often than not.

Your opponent’s tendencies play a role in playing a premium hand just as they would in any other hand. If you make a raise in position, and a player calls you after limping from out of position, you need to ask yourself how many hands they have played, and what are the chances he may be trapping and slow playing a stronger hand. In position, a continuation bet after a check is a strong play a large percentage of the time. If you are called, and the board is not looking good relative to your holding, consider checking behind on the turn and then folding to any bet on the river, or calling if you deem it appropriate. Once you cede on the turn, know that your options to take away the pot will greatly decrease, so avoid going crazy on the river after showing weakness on the turn, most novice players don’t process tricky plays.

Position is obviously relevant, as it always is a consideration for any strong player. If you hold something strong in early position, an aggressive player may make a call from late position simply because he has more options when he acts after you. This is a prime example of where to be careful post flop, and make a decision is to what you are going to do in the event the flop doesn’t hit you, and your continuation bet is called. When in position against the blinds or an early position limp or raise, you have this advantage, and your hand becomes even more potent. Be aware of your position and the players to act before or behind you whenever you are playing a pot.

Many other less significant factors can be used to find places where folding is a better idea than going broke with one pair, and you will discover those as you journey deeper into the world of poker. Explore new areas of your game, and challenge your notions of how the game should be played, and you will progress as a player. Folding a big hand is one step forward in improving your game.

The PPS at the Denver DNC

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

In the United States, there is an association for just about every conceivable cause and concern. There is the Professional Beauty Association for hairdressers, the American Restroom Association, and even The National Association of Left-Handed Golfers. So, it should come as no surprise that there exists the poker Players Alliance, an association with the stated mission to “promote the game and protect the right to play poker in all its forms.” Not only is the PPA leading the good fight to legitimatize online poker wagering in the U.S., they have cleverly found ways to make their political voice heard. Recently, they organized non-profit tournaments to coincide with the presidential nominating conventions. During the Democratic convention in Denver, their charity match not only generated positive press, they raised about $60,000 for the Paralyzed Veterans of America. The event drew poker greats like Andy Bloch, and celebrities such as Ben Affleck, Seth Myers and Sarah Silverman. Members of congress and their staff were also welcome so there was a healthy field of more than 100 players. Affleck ultimately won the tournament after a six-hour pokerbattle that ended at 4:00 a.m., but it was clear that the PPA was the biggest winner of all.
