Zen Internet has posted its proposal for an up-gradation to BT’s 21CN network. The upgrade will, however, not be as fast as was initially expected and may take around 7-8 months for transfer of existing customers to the new broadband speed, which means the service will be available only by spring 2010. Zen Internet has blamed the delay on the restrictions of having an inadequate number of BT engineers in local exchanges.

The introduction of ADSL2+ service heralds the release of Zen’s first ‘up to’ 20Mb broadband connectivity, which is available not only to current customers, but also new ones. The new customers can be kitted up with the new service on condition that the service is available in their area. The old customers will, however, initially receive similar broadband services at the same prices and the upgrade will be put into effect shortly afterwards, resulting in faster download speeds.

The customers are to be moved from the 21CN BT exchanges to the new ‘up to 20Mb broadband’ connections in less than a year. However, the speeds will depend upon the distance of the customer from the local exchange as well as other factors like the type of external wiring, not only from the BT exchange to the residential or official premises but also the internal wiring.

Gloomy News for Tiscali Broadband Customers Following Audit

Tiscali broadband customers are being warned they risk having their broadband connections cut off unless the Italian-based provider can settle its debts.

Today, independent auditors Ernst & Young gave warning of “fundamental uncertainties” on the future of Tiscali and confirmed the company could only continue to maintain operation if it successfully renegotiated significant debts with its lenders.

Of course, keen to keep the ball rolling and maintain subscriber numbers, Tiscali has responded by heavily contesting the auditors’ summary and confirming it proposes a plan to reduce debt at a shareholder meeting to be held before May:

“In the meantime the company continues to operate as normal both in Italy and in the UK both with customers and suppliers,” said a Tiscali spokesperson.

But despite company protests it’s clear things are starting to look more and more bleak for the broadband provider.

Earlier this week, customers with email accounts on the provider’s screaming.net domain had their accounts halted after the provider failed to renew the domain name, leaving all email accounts and webspace services without a host.

If the provider fails to meet an agreement with its lenders over 1.8 million UK customers risk being cut off from their broadband service.
